The need for breakdown cover on all horseboxes and trailers

So, team Brookhurst Risk,  set off to a pony premier show at Onley Equestrian Centre on Friday. Half an hour into the journey, we stopped to find our brake calliper had seized on. This was a very scary experience for us all, as the lorry wheel was smoking as it was so hot, filling the horse area with smoke. We had no choice but to get the ponies off the lorry in this instance not something we would recommend unless they are in danger as this can be equally as dangerous. We were also very lucky as we had breakdown with Amlin Breakdown who came to our rescue.  Towing our lorry to the garage. Our ponies were loaded onto another lorry and taken to the show.

As we reflect on this, what could we have done to prevent and protect this happening again…..we had, had our lorry checked over only 10 days ago but these things do happen. So here is what we recommend you have in place before setting out in your lorry.

  1. Breakdown cover with a specialist horsebox breakdown company
  2. Fire extinguishers
  3. Fully charged mobile phone
  4. Waterproof rugs and jackets even if they are sheets – trust me in this country if it rains and you’re standing at the side of the road you will be glad to be dry!
  5. Warning triangle
  6. Lots of treats for you and your horse to keep you going.

We hope to have our lorry back on the road soon.

We want to wish you all safe travelling!
